The more I’ve thought about the Hossa signing, the more doubts I’ve had about the impact on the team. Have we mortgaged the future and cost the team the chance of signing Kane or Toews next year?

    To ATL: Pavel Kubina
To TOR: Garnet Exelby and Colin Stuart

This Thrashers fan HATES this move.

How does this Thrasher fan feel now, knowing they were able to get Antropov after earlier moves?

    • brudisel 12:50 am on July 3, 2009 Permalink

Horrible moves. Absolutely terrible. I’ve been a fan of John Anderson’s coaching for years and years, but his system demands youth and speed which neither Kubina nor Antropov have. I have no reason to believe any chemistry can be built with these additions, knowing the 08-09 roster.

Remember when Colorado picked up two guys from Toronto? Atlanta did the same thing, and they’ll pay for it.

You heard it here first. The Thrashers will finish in the bottom three of the league. I absolutely 100% guarantee it.

Hossa’s deal pretty much means end of the line for Martin Havlat in Chicago. Hawks are also looking to possibly move Cristobal Huet to Edmonton or Colorado if they can re-sign Nikolai Khabibulin. Also, Hawks sign Tomas Kopecky for a 2-year deal, and they have probably lost Matt Walker to Tampa.

    • kselvig 1:51 pm on July 1, 2009 Permalink

You have to think Colorado signing Craig Anderson ends any Huet speculation.

    • pbenvin 2:37 pm on July 1, 2009 Permalink

You boys in Chicago are in for one hell of a headache in Hossa. Mark my words.

    • JimNeveau 5:15 pm on July 1, 2009 Permalink

Khabibulin signing in Edmonton pretty much ends that. Maybe the Islanders will take Huet since apparently they aren’t satisfied with DiPietro (sic) in net, being that they signed Dwayne Roloson.

According to TSN Hossa has signed a contract with the Blackhawks. Apparently it’s a multi-year deal but dollar amount wasn’t announced.

Rumored to be $5.5 mil per, 12 year deal… still no concrete confirmation…

    • pbenvin 1:09 pm on July 1, 2009 Permalink

Jesus, Detroit offered him $4 million per.

    • pbenvin 1:11 pm on July 1, 2009 Permalink

The official amount is 12 years at $5.2 million. Have fun Chicago.

Kovalev stays in Montreal, 2-year, $8.8 mil deal. Habs also extend offers to Gaborik, Hossa, and Havlat(!?) This according to thefourthperiod. Has Bob Gainey lost his mind?

    • kselvig 12:15 pm on July 1, 2009 Permalink

(dollar ammount unconfirmed in regards to Kovalev)

    • pbenvin 12:51 pm on July 1, 2009 Permalink

If Hossa goes to Montreal I’d be shocked.

    • kselvig 12:59 pm on July 1, 2009 Permalink

It sounds like Hossa to Chicago is all but done… just waiting a confirmation

    • BruceH 3:44 pm on July 2, 2009 Permalink

Heard that Kovalev is not likely staying in MTL. He’ll join Koivu - Higgins - Komisarek - Tanguay as ex-Habs

    • kselvig 4:54 pm on July 2, 2009 Permalink

Hearing that too. I guess lesson learned to wait for “confirmation” on signings!

Reports coming out of Detroit right now are Marian Hossa is currently in talks with the Chicago Blackhawks. I don’t see that happening. Don’t be surprised if Ken Holland works his magic and keeps Hossa in Detroit.

TSN reporting it’s a 7 year deal averaging $3.75 mil. Tampa’s not a bad place to end your career, if you don’t mind the losing anyways. February’s in Florida are a lot nicer than Vancouver, though.

Bouwmeester locked up, will not hit the market tomorrow. Calgary signs him to a 5 year deal, averaging $6.6 mil a season.

What’s the word on Leopold in Florida? Are they just giving up on him?

    • kselvig 10:40 am on July 1, 2009 Permalink

Leopold’s agent has said that he and interim GM Randy Sexton have talked, “Sexton also said newly acquired defenseman Jordan Leopold’s agent told him that Florida was an attractive destination for his client.” -from the Miami Herald. But no deal done yet.

Scott Gomez has been traded to the Montreal Canadiens, for Christopher Higgins (for those of you who don’t know) … Good Trade or Bad Trade?

Did Sather really just out-GM Gainey? 2nd worst contract in the NHL in Gomez for RFA Higgins and top prospect McDonagh? WOW! There’s gotta be a riot in Montreal right now.

    • BruceH 5:50 pm on June 30, 2009 Permalink

A riot ? why. There are some big problems (off ice) in Montreal and Higgins was right in the middle of it. In Gomez we get a 5 time 70 point guy (and Montreal needs offense with Koivu and Tanguay heading out) - Higgins best season ever is what 50 something. The only downside is the contract but $$$ is never an issue in Montreal, we have plenty of cap room and owners have money to spend. And McDonagh is just another mid-sized dman - with potential but still expendable at this point. (He is 20 and not exactly looking like Bobby Orr, in fact he’s a bit down the depth chart even as prospects go.)
So - I’m pleased with the deal.

    • cshafer 6:19 pm on June 30, 2009 Permalink

Really? McDonagh is your #1 prospect according to HF even though I really like Pacioretty more. Doesn’t mean McDonagh didn’t have significant value. As far as Higgins is concerned I’m aware he’s overrated, but I’m sure the Habs could’ve done a lot better than a 29 year old center signed for 4 more years at 7.3m who was desperately wanted out of New York. The fans would’ve given him away. GMs realize that there’s more value than that, but it’s still iffy. If you’re planning on him being a top line center for an organization focusing on offense I don’t know if the risk is worth it.

And I understand you have plenty of room…but for the price you could’ve dragged a LOT more out of NY. It almost seems like a last ditch desperation move for a decent sized center. I know as soon as Lupul was traded Briere came off the board. There’s not many other top line centers available.

    • BruceH 7:05 pm on June 30, 2009 Permalink

And without Koivu we’re not strong at center. It all hinges on which Gomez shows up - the NY version and we loose/ the NJ version and we do OK. Pacioretty has potential to be a high caliber power forward - watched him a lot last year, keep an eye in him.

    • BruceH 7:06 pm on June 30, 2009 Permalink

Our top prospect right now might be Weber, not sure how he rates with the critics but I liked what I saw.
